It’s All About the Beard was written as part of a data analysis game, with a group of young people living in an economically deprived area. Sitting in a circle with Stories2Connect team members Cath Larkins and Candice Satchwell the young people drew characters, archetypal people in their communities, and then reflected on the themes in the data that were spread across the floor in front of them. They made up stories, giving each other challenges to overcome in the story telling and offering solutions from the evidence in the data. The stories were audio-recorded and slightly reworked to maintain the circular narrative flow of reflection. This story tells of young people struggling with racism, drug use, family and relationships break up, house moving and the Jeremy Kyle show. It shows how young people connect with and support each other, and the role of youth workers in supporting this.
